Known for his studies on the Iberian culture, founder of the Casa de Velázquez (Madrid), Pierre Paris is a brilliant archaeologist and hispanist. Formed in the late nineteenth century in the most prestigious French scientific institutions of the time, the École normale and the French School at Athens, his debut as a researcher and teacher remained unknown during a long time. This essay examines his Athenian record in order to see how a young scholar trained in classical philology has gradually oriented his work toward archaeological studies. The work leading by Paris Pierre in Delos was the subject of another paper. In this essay, we will examine the excavations he directed nearly Elatea at Athena Cranaia sanctuary, a site where his approach combines archeology, philology and art history.
