DOCUMENTARY MATERIALS ABOUT P.K. ESSEN (1772-1844) IN THE FUNDS OF THE RUSSIAN STATE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES
Abstract
The article provides a brief overview of the most important documents on the activities of the Vyborg and Orenburg military Governor, St. Petersburg Military Governor-General, General of Infantry, Count P.K. Essen, stored in the funds of the Russian State Historical Archive. It is concluded that, although the documents of the RGIA store documentary materials on the civil history of the imperial period of our country, nevertheless, documents about military officials have been deposited in numerous funds. The surviving documentary evidence is a valuable historical source and tells about the interaction of the military governor directly with the emperor, because he was his confidant, as well as the political relationship with various higher, central and local state institutions in solving the most important issues related to the management of the territories entrusted to him. The description of the documents makes it possible to imagine what was included in the functions of the military governor and what tasks he had to solve at his post. The reports of P.K. Essen, in which he reported on the epidemiological stoppage in St. Petersburg and the province during the cholera, as well as during the cholera riot of 1831, are considered in detail.
