Between 1724 and 1745, Étienne Verrier, King’s Engineer, worked for the glory of France in the American colonies, constructing the Fortress of Louisbourg on the Isle Royale. The study of the extensive correspondence he exchanged with the royal administration and the local authorities shines a new light on various aspects not only on his personal life, but also on the living conditions at the site, his professional ambitions, as well as the transmission of his knowledge, giving a more precise picture of the man and the engineer.
