Nanomaterial involving metal and metal oxide signifies a key driver to the implementation of solid phase microextrractor for complete removal of various pollutants residues in water. Nanomaterials combined with porous polymeric membranes like structures e.g. polyurethane foams (PUFs) have also gathered extra attraction to the adoption of water purification because of their ease of management and modifications, surface characteristics, cost-effective, and mechanical, chemical and thermal properties. Thus, this study reports the characterization and impact of Ag and α Fe2O3 nano particles (NPs) individually impregnated PUFs as solid platforms (AgNPs/PUFs, α Fe2O3 NPs/PUFs) for complete retention and consequent quantification of chromium (VI) at low levels in environmental water at pH < 2.0. Batch experiments displayed remarkable sorption capacity (58.5 ± 1.02 mg/g) and extraction percentage (96.0 ± 5.4 %) of chromium (VI) with maximum sorption time not exceeding 45 min. In this quest, the kinetics of chromium (VI) sorption close-fitting with pseudo-second order model for AgNPs and α- Fe2O3 NPs treated PUFs with rate constant (k2) of 0.013 and 0.01 g (mg. min)-1 and half-life time (t1/2) of 5.0 ± 0.05 and 3.8 ± 0.02 min, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters of chromium (VI) sorption onto AgNPs treated PUFs sorbent were calculated and properly assigned. In water, low levels of chromium (VI) was quantitatively sorbed by AgNPs/PUFs sorbent packed column and recovered with NaOH (1.0 M) at 2.0 mLmin−1 flow rate. Chromium (III) ions after oxidation by H2O2 in alcoholic KOH were retained and recovered at the optimal parameters of chromium (VI) retention onto sorbent packed column. Sorbent packed column was reused 2–3 cycles without drop in its efficacy (±5%).
