The Future of Sleep Staging, Revisited
Abstract

At this time, paper and ink records were the standard way of recording sleep records. Computerised systems had only recently become commercially available. The original article was a response to those initial computer-based systems, pointing out the potential limitations of the systems. Now, digital sleep recording is ubiquitous and software and hardware capabilities have improved immeasurably. However, I will argue that despite 50 years of progress, there has not been an increase in the accuracy of sleep staging. I will propose that this is due to the limitations of the task that we have set the automatic analysis methods.Keywords: sleep staging, Rechtschaffen and Kales, EEG, artificial intelligence
