A construção dos trópicos na medicina portuguesa: saberes e práticas no ultramar do século XVIII

Abstract

The article aims to analyze the perspective of surgeons and doctors on the climate and diseases in Portuguese America during the 18th century. Based on the medical treaties and other printed materials, it offers to understand how local observations and experience in the Portuguese Empire were elements that contributed to the construction of the idea of the tropics in the medical knowledge of the period and to the preparation of specific knowledge about illnesses and healing practices.
