INTRODUCTION: This research aims to demonstrate the value of contemporary audiovisual art within the paradigm of art education. Our study uses the video-essay as a vehicle for secondary education students to explore and construct a sense of personal identities. METHOD: In this inquiry, which combined qualitative methodology and artistic methodology, we observed and interpreted the artistic experiences narrated by the students involved, focusing on three experiences from a total of twenty-two students. RESULTS: The artistic experiences generated by the video-essay were framed in audiovisual productions where the students explored their personal identity in a way that linked contemporary art and audiovisual media. The students were able to produce an audiovisual discourse through the use of video and personal reflection. DISCUSSION: The researchers propose that the video-essay can offer adolescent students the opportunity to improve their powers of expression and critical thinking skills when they use this medium to explore and construct a sense of personal identity.
