A Cine-Anthropologue within the triple helix of İmage, Metaphor and Allegory: Theodors Angelopoulos / İMGE, METAFOR, ALEGORİ ÜÇLÜ SARMALINDA BİR SİNE-ANTHROPOLOGUE: THEODOROS ANGELOPULOS
Abstract
We are passing through rough times in the Anthropocene epoc. Everyday thousands of migrants are trying to cross the border illegally; if they fail to cross the legally protected borders, later they test themselves with the natural borders especially with the sea. As within the context of migration the paths of Turkey and Greece has crossed once again, indispensably Angelopoulos’ name springs to mind. In such a situation where Realpolitik has shaped the politics on the power basis; the hegemon determines both internal, external and public policy according to its own interests; the ethical values are circumvented by all kinds of interest, art is still a safe harbor. The paper takes its starting point in the narratives of Angelopoulos’ cinema. Each sequence in the scenes in his narratives heralds conscientious and elevated photographic and symbolic style and cinematographic aesthetics and thus transforms into a writerly texts where multilayered reception becomes possible. Angelopoulos fuses the possibilities of cinema with his idiosyncratic poetics immingled with history and migration and becomes the vanguard of a modality of symbolic and metaphoric and allegoric interrogation. Accordingly the paper traces the claim that Angelopoulos translated his idiosyncratic poetics within the triple helix of image, metaphor and allegory into a self-reflexive and epic cine-anthropologie.
