Geotechnical maps are considered as the most significant basic data sources, requested by urban planners and engineers, in selecting suitable sites for massive constructions industrial and land-fill areas, and in urban development planning. Rapid increase in urban population caused irregular and random constructions. Development planning in general, realized too slow with respect to very high rate of constructions.Tectonic features of the east Anatolia, location of most urban areas on alluvial soil in active fault zones and random construction are the main factors of increased life loss and destruction caused by natural disasters. Erzurum urban area has experienced many destructive earthquakes in history, due to its tectonic setting close to the southeastern combining point of eastern and southern marginal faults defining Karasu Basin. In this study the western segment of the Erzurum urban area has been seperated into five geotechnical unites. Distribution of sampling locations, geotechnical parameters and the boundries of zones are checked by statisticial analysis methods.
