In this article Rebecca Tilles relates the story of the commission for Marie Antoinette’s first jewellery cabinet, made for her marriage to the Dauphin in 1769, its stylistic development in the context of neoclassicism, as well as the cabinet’s contents, which included wedding gifts delivered after the ceremony. The article also analyses the documents concerning the order in the Archives Nationales; the original design, held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France; and two iconic paintings of the queen with the cabinet, today held in Versailles.
