Post offices on the route Iași – Chișinau in the medieval period and the beginning of the modern one

Abstract

The article updates several historical data according to which in the medieval period and the beginning of the modern one, in the east of the Prut, on the route Iași–Chișinau, several post offices were established: Rezina (on the Cetireni estate), Vălcineț, Călărași (Bârâiac), Straseni, Chișinau, etc. In the Mongol-Tatar period, the road that started from Iași was important and, after crossing the Prut river, from Țuțora, it led first through Valea cea Mare, and then, through valley of the Bâc, to Tighina. After leaving Iași, the traveler reached the first post office, which was located in Valea cea Mare near the villages of Cetireni and Unțești (Ungheni district). Usually, near each post office was located a Mongolian-Tatar family, who guarded the passing passengers and host at night, also provided them with horses, vehicles, food, fodder, etc. The merchants paid for all the services and the locals took advantage of the money
