It is a paradox that Greek novels, defined ever since Antiquity as romances, should convey no erotic emotion. In the present work we try to demonstrate, by way of a formal analysis, that this erotic sense does actually exist, although the authors resort to various devices to put it across which are generally characterised by their subtlety.
