The political farewell speech is an address delivered by a president at the end of his term. It is a non-formal address ; only a specific temporality is imposed, for taking stock of past policies and presenting a perspective on the future of the country. In 2019, the outgoing president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, made two farewell addresses : the first in an institutional setting, the second in a partisan gathering. This article explores the variations in the configuration of Mauricio Macri’s ethos between his farewell speeches through an analysis of discursive temporalities. We will observe that each speech reveals an ethos relying on the temporal structure in a different way : one speech exhibits the image of someone ready to leave, the other reveals the profile of a man who will not leave the political scene.
