PRESS POLICY AND POPULAR SUPPORT FOR THE VESPERS Da PRAIERA: Lopes Gama and the journalistic clashes between 1845 and 1846

This research aims at analyzing the ways in which popular support was obtained in the context that preceded the Praieira Uprising by analyzing the journalistic activity of Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama (1792-1852). First, a historiographic analysis is made of the intrinsic relationship between the electoral process, the degree of mobilization of the campaigns, the urban growth of Recife, and the consolidation of political parties throughout the 1840s. the sudden change in Lopes Gama's journalism when he begins to form part of the Praieiro Party. Finally, two practices that the press used to exert influence in broad social sectors, especially in the illiterate population of the capital, but also in certain groups of intellectuals: the use of verses and the popular stories.
