Underlined is the most significant function of this identifier for authors and readers alike, which is attaching a link to a citation source to the source itself. Examined is the identifier’s structure, as well as how it differs from an internet-address index for an article, i.e. from a URL. In conclusion the article provides information on the rules for assigning a DOI, as well as on ways to tell whether or not the identifier is valid (genuine).
