The student must be alphabetized to be able to read maps, as well as learning to write and to be proficient at the required mathematics. The children that has never created his own cartographic representation has plenty of difficulties when it comes to understanding a map. In this article, some of the lived experiences are recounted based on proposals elaborated for a work that unites research, teaching and extension which aims at preparing professors to be able to initiate cartographic alphabetization programmes in their respective schools.
