Infections associated with health care in the intensive care unit of a general hospital

Background: the infections associated with health care are a relevant problem of public health, with a great economic and social significance.Objective: to characterize the patients with infections associated with health care, at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” General Teaching Hospital of Las Tunas, from January 2017 through December 2019.Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the aforementioned institution and during the period herein declared. The sample was made up of 152 patients, older than 18 years of age, with complete medical records. The following variables were assessed: sex, age, comorbidities, type of infection and isolated microorganisms. For the analysis of the data descriptive statistics was used.Results: the male sex (61,2 %) and the 55 to 76 group age (46,7 %) were the most affected ones, with a predominance of non-transmissible chronic diseases in most of the patients with 150 cases. Pneumonia associated with ventilation was the most frequent type of infection (69,7 %) The prevailing isolated microorganisms were Acinetobacter spp (25,4 %) and Klebsiella spp (20,9 %).Conclusions: the patients with infections associated with health care were characterized.
