The remarkable extension of the Arecomic territory and the political importance given to it by Strabo are unmistakably intriguing: this twofold characteristic is often explained by the existence within the tenure of Nemausus of twenty-four small towns, Strabo’s kômai, Pliny’s oppida ignobilia. If such territorial partitions did actually exist, is it possible to recover their proper location, even though they cannot be actually situated ? What is here envisaged is the complexity of the institutional history of the Arecomic territory and of the area of influence of Nemausus.
