Alte Fragen, neue Methoden – Philologische und digitale Verfahren im Dialog. Ein Beitrag zum Forschungsdiskurs um Entsagung und Ironie bei Goethe

Abstract

In the discussion about the status of Digital Humanities (DH) as an academic discipline, possibilities to transfer digital technologies, methods, and theories back are often given. But how exactly can digital methods for text analysis leverage the bridging into more traditional literary studies? And how can theoretically complex literary concepts be investigated digitally? Based on a concrete example, our article shows how a scalable reading (as a combination of distant and close reading methods) in DH can promote the discussions on renunciation and irony in Goethe philology and connect the two.
