Abstract

This volume is based on the conference in honor of professor Umberto Artioli (1939-2004), founder of the Mantua of the Gonzagas archive. It puts a specific focus on mostly overlooked groups of ‘minor’ participants and contributors in arts and crafts to theatrical, performative and ceremonial events. Hence emerges a vivid and complex panorama of renaissance-baroque court life. Referring to Artioli’s weighting of philological and esoteric aspects it is suggested that further emphasis on the latter could now open for new research perspectives.
