The features of the translation of artistic works, taking into account the category of expressiveness
Abstract
The article analyzes expressiveness as a linguistic category. The peculiarities of the translation of works of art were considered, taking into account the category of expressiveness (for example, the translation of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel «Slaughterhouse-Five or The Children’s Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death» done by P. Sokolovskyi). It was noted that in contemporary researchers it was stated that expression had been a vivid manifestation of feelings, mood, thoughts. In the broad sense, expression means the increased expressiveness of the work of art, which is achieved by the whole set of artistic means and depends on the manner of execution and the nature of the work of the artist; in the narrow one – this is a manifestation of the temperament of the artist, the explication of his creative handwriting, a reflection of the author’s style in the texture of the smear, in the drawing, in the color and compositional decisions of the work of painting, sculpture and others. «Expressiveness» refers to both natural events, objects and relations that arise between them, and a certain kind of creativity, the essence of which is reduced to the conscious of design of a certain system of phenomena or concepts, as well as the system of words in order to cause the effect of expressiveness. The article states that the translation should cause the reader similar emotions, like the original language. The task of an interpreter is to search for a match that does not differ from the original lexical unit stylistically, would have the same or, at least, a similar emotional and social color. When translating linguistic vocabulary in artistic works, the interpreter is often confronted with the fact that there are not always adequate equivalents in the language of the original and the language of translation. In this case, the translator has to use other methods and techniques of translation: the inclusion of additional elements into the text; omission of elements, redundant in terms of foreign language reader; the transformation of the seman-tic structure of words and expressions; compromise translation solutions; the use of adequate substitutions (interpretation, antonymic translation, compensation, etc.).
