Every year the percentage of people suffering from mental disorders increases (Janas- Kozik 2016: 61). This phenomenon is observed in various age groups, including children and adolescents (Kowalczuk, Krajewska-Kułak, Cybulski 2016: 52). On the one hand, it is important to disseminate reliable knowledge about mental disorders, while on the other to counteract the stereotypical perception of the mentally ill, which may lead to stigmatisation or social exclusion. One of the sources of knowledge on mental health disorders is film (e.g. Barriga, Shapiro, Fernandez 2010; Byrne 2009). The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of film images of mental health disorders by young people aged 11–15. The conclusions of the research may be helpful in creating educational and preventive initiatives aimed at young people at school, and provide an empirical basis for cultural therapeutic activities using film.
