Fragoletta. Naples et Paris en 1799, by Henri de Latouche, is considered the founding novel of the androgyne motif in the 19th century. The eponymous character projects a protean image of femininity – warlike, libertine, mysterious – in which we can see a critique of Ancien Régime society and the status it assigns to women. According to Michel Crouzet, Fragoletta is a singularly disunited work : a formation novel, but also an adventure and historical novel, sentimental novel and black novel. This article aims to show how Latouche hijacks and subverts the codes of the formation ovel.
