In the 17th century, two primordial elements – politics and religion – designed and systemized the international framework, from a conceptual and diplomatic point of view. The political history of the Country of Moldova and the Romanian Country, during this hectic century, is distinguished by the continuous efforts of the rulers to preserve the throne and the autonomy of the country with the support of the great powers and, more recently, the papal state. In the first quarter of the 17th century, qualitative transformations of the Romanian diplomacy are observed, which skillfully establish collaborative levers with the European courts, especially the French one, and the Pope of Rome, through the Catholic missions sent to the Romanian territories, all in shameful conditions of Ottoman control.
