The aim of this study was to characterize the production of empirical articles involving the paternity issue and their contribution to child development among family members, published between 2000 and 2012 in Brazilian journals indexed in the databases IndexPsi, SciELO and PePSIC. Father, paternity and paternal were the descriptors used. One hundred articles were fully analyzed. The qualitative data analysis was used in 70% of them. Data collection was the preponderant method (60%) and interview was the most used collection technique (47%). Among the topics investigated include: pregnancy, delivery and postpartum (25%), exercise of parenthood (22%), child development (15%), adolescence (14%) and conceptions of paternal behavior (13%). It is suggested that future studies investigate the paternal participation and the sharing of roles in the family, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches and involving longitudinal studies.
