This text presents our experiences with automatic visitor-monitoring in Czech Republic protected areas between 2010 and 2018. The case study from Lysá hora in PLA Beskydy revealed unexpected trends of visitor development in ecologically sensitive areas. The Vůznice in PLA Křivoklátsko and Kněhyně PLA Beskydy case studies then confirmed that acceptance of public entry restriction is influenced more by suitably chosen interpretation than by the application of strict restriction and mechanical barriers. In addition, our results established that the PLA Jizerské hory case study has helped solve conflicts between interest groups in that particular location. Finally, these and other examples of good practice illustrate the possibility of using visitor-monitoring data in managing all localities, not only protected areas.
