Hypertensive patients seen at the emergency unit showed to be different (p < 0.05) from those seen at the outpatient clinic regarding: higher blood pressure; lower income; not belonging to the hospital community; greater alcohol intake; became aware of their hypertension because felt bad; measured blood pressure less often; did not take the medicine more often. In conclusion, unfavorable characteristics can contribute to hypertensive patients who do not follow anti-hypertension treatment adequately, leading to care in emergency units.
