Since ancient times, songs have been considered a witness of social concerns and a means for conveying them. For this reason, certain issues that are of great interest for French society are reflected in current popular songs. This article aims to analyze Zebda’s songs in relation with the idea of French identity. We will apply the principles of Halliday’s systemic functional grammar and van Dijk’s theories of ideology, with the aim of identifying the strategies used in the lyrics when expressing a certain identity.
