This article starts by introducing the history of critical environmental education in Brazil. Then it approaches its epistemological, pedagogical and ontological foundations according to Marxist categories. Finally, it outlines its specificities in what concerns the environment, throwing light on its potential to understanding it as well as to producing knowledge in a critical transformative educational perspective.
