This article aims to understand how the modernity of Roberto Burle Marx’s gardens drew from strategies that could be called conservative or even regressive from the traditional historical perspective of Brazilian modernism. Analysis of one of his particular habits – the use of architectural components acquired in demolitions in the composition of his gardens –, in connection with his practices as a botanical and art collector, can provide new critical approaches to Burle Marx’s landscape oeuvre.
