Literatura panegírica dedicada al VIII duque de Medina Sidonia: del Elogio de Pedro Espinosa a los Gusmaneidos libri de Vicente Mariner

Abstract

This paper aims above all to ascertain the true identity of the hero in the not yet wholly published Gusmaneidos libri quinque (1631), an epic poem by humanist Vicente Mariner, and to demonstrate that this hero, named «Alphonsus» in this poem, is Manuel Alonso Pérez de Guzmán y Silva (1579-1636), Earl of Niebla and Duke of Medina Sidonia. In order to proof that identity we study the main facts we know about his life, which are also present in some panegyrical texts dedicated to him by famous poet Pedro Espinosa.
