Purpose. The article presents the author’s view on the functioning of conditional and relatively-distributive word constructions in the biomedical literature. The purpose of the work is to identify and describe the semantic features of syntactic units from the point of view of the pragmatics of the scientific (medical) text. The methodological basis of the study is the principles of the scientific approach to the text, according to which the scientific text is considered as a source of different information from the position of content and form. In connection with these directions, the following methods were used in the work: purposive sampling, scientific description, statistical analysis - which allowed obtaining reliable information on the semantic significance of conditional and relatively-distributive constructions in the biomedical literature. The results of the study are as follows: the syntax of the scientific (medical) text differs widely in the use of conditional complex sentences, the functional purpose of which is related to the representation of medical knowledge in the form of laws and regularities, most often based on the probable representation of phenomena and their connections in objective reality. The analysis of the functioning of relatively-distributive structures in the medical text has revealed the special activity of these syntactic models in the aspect of expressing the result of active dynamic processes. In turn, the relatively-circumstantial type of complex sentences with subjective-modal meaning is unproductive in the studied texts and often used to express a general clinical evaluation. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used for further investigations concerning the syntax of the scientific (medical) text, in teaching foreign medical students the language of the specialty.
