ORGANIZATION OF STUDENT DESIGN AND RESEARCH WORK IN THE FIELD OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN A NON-LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITY

Background. The novelty of the article lies in the original approach to involving students of non-linguistic direction of studies (namely, sport) into research work conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages. The student research club of the Department acts as an organizing and supervising body of the project activities within the students’ community. While doing the project described hereby, students can develop both their communicative competence and their experience in conducting research. These are considered the main purposes of the work under review. Comparing sports terminologies in Russian and English, young researchers are meant to study terminological nomination within the cognitive linguistic paradigm, i.e. on the concept of the metaphorical modeling. Thus learning basics of the linguistic research, students may acquire a better understanding of the process of the terminological nomination in Russian which is under strong influence of English. This also contributes to the deepening of students' knowledge of intercultural communication. Purpose. The study aims to improve the communicative and research skills of the students of Physical Education through their involvement into the work of the student research club organized in the Department of Foreign Languages. Materials and methods. The task was to organize and implement a student research project in the field of linguistics. The main participants of the projects were the students of the various branches of sports, studying to be coaches and teachers of Physical Education. There were used methods of applied linguistics to study bilingual terminological glossaries, and the method of metaphorical modeling. The project is a comprehensive study of the Russian and English-language figure skating terms in comparison. The methodology is based on studies of terminological systems and analysis of sociocultural stereotypes. Results. The study has practical as well as educational values. The project activity of the described type can contribute to the students' understanding of the nature of the language nomination in Russian and English in comparison. It may also be used to deepen the students' knowledge and to develop their skills in the field of intercultural communication, to get them acquainted with the basics of scientific research, to motivate them to choose science and research as their future professional area.
