Purpose. The article deals with the problems translators face when translating the Ossetian version of The Narts’ Legends into the languages with different lexical and grammatical structures, namely Russian, English and French. It is the first time that the translated texts of The Narts’ Legends are analyzed from the point of view of the folklore translation. The goal of the research is to make a lingvo-cultural analysis of the translated texts of the particular Narts’ legends to prove that the translators’ approach to the translation of folklore texts differs from that of other belles-letters texts. The main methods employed in the research are theanalytical-descriptive, contrastive ones as well as the method of contextual analysis. Results. The results of the research showed that despite certain drawbacks such as semantic incongruity the translators manage to achieve the goals of the folklore translation. The translated texts are easy for reading and understanding. Practical implications. The received results can be used in teaching theory and practice of translation, cultural science, comparative lexicology of the Ossetian and Russian languages, the Ossetian and English languages and the Ossetian and French languages.
