Atomically precise boundaries of two-dimensional crystals can play host to novel electronic properties. Here, the authors identify distinct one dimensional electronic states corresponding to different atomically sharp edge terminations of monolayer 1H-NbSe2 and, as a result, the intrinsic charge density wave in the material is reconstructed into a stripe ordering near the crystal edge.
