Subversive to some, martyr for others, the figure of Mons. Angelelli – Catholic bishop murdered by the Argentine military regime in 1976 – ended up transcending the boundaries of the ecclesiastical world, becoming a symbol of resistance to the military dictatorship. Filed as an accident, the “Angelelli case” ended buried under the blanket of forgetfulness on which the fragile democracy in Argentina took its first steps, coming to conclusion only thirty years later. The purpose of this article is to use the story of Mons. Angelelli as a tool to reading both the complex relationships established between the Church and the Argentine military regime, and the controversial issue of the legal proceedings for crimes committed during the dictatorship.
