THE AUTHORSHIP CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE «COMMENTARY ON THE PROPHET ISAIAH» ATTRIBUTED TO ST BASILTHE GREAT

Abstract

This article studies the manuscript tradition surrounding the «Commentary on the Prophet Isaiah»: its language, style, theological views, its method of exegesis and philological analysis, the internal evidence of the text for the date and place of its creation, the witness of contemporary and later writers, as well as the critical studies of this work dating from the time of the Protestant Reformation. This study off ers the conclusion that the authorship of the «Commentary» attested by the manuscript tradition is genuine.
