La Isla Perejil, la perla decimonónica del Mediterráneo
Abstract
Antes del incidente entre España y Marruecos en julio de 2002 pocos personas eran capaces de situar la Isla Perejil en un mapa. Sin embargo, el islote fue uno de los enclaves mediterráneos más codiciados por Reino Unido, Francia, España e incluso Estados Unidos durante el siglo XIX. La isla, considerada un punto estratégico en el control del Mediterráneo, desató numerosos enfrentamientos diplomáticos entre las potencias europeas. Este artículo recorre la azarosa historia de la Isla Perejil, durante el siglo XIX, basándonos, principalmente, en el contenido de despachos confidenciales intercambiados entre el Ministerio de Estado y el consulado general de España en Marruecos.Palabras Clave: Isla Perejil, España, Marruecos, Mediterráneo, geopolítica.________________Perejil Island, the pearl of the MediterraneanAbstract:Before the incident between Spain and Morocco in July 2002, few people were able to locate the Perejil Island on a map. However, the island was one of the most disputed Mediterranean enclaves by United Kingdon, France, Spain and even the United States during the nineteenth century. The island, considered a strategic point in the control of the Mediterranean, sparked numerous diplomatic clashes between European powers. In this article we go through the eventful history of Perejil Island, during the nineteenth century, based mainly on the contents of private dispatches exchanged between the State Ministry and the Consulate-General of Spain in Morocco.Keywords: Perejil Island; Spain; Morocco; Mediterranean; geopolitics
