MANO, un environnement d'apprentissage du français écrit pour les enfants sourds

Abstract

For a deaf person, learning a written language is very similar to the discovery of a foreign language. Most of the cultural aspects that are related to the written language take their origins in the spoken language. Therefore, learning a written language requires, as a prerequisite to the understanding and the correct use of the lexicon and the syntax, the understanding of foreign notions. As deaf persons are very sensitive to visual features, it seems interesting to use the figurative capacities of computers to design educational environments dedicated to the discovery and the apprenticeship of the written language. In this paper we present first the problematic of teaching a written language to deaf persons and the interest of the interactive features of computers for teachers and students. We then present a prototype of a scenario to help deaf children discover the notion of time.
