Effects of lane and shoulder widths on accident rates in the two-lane rural roads are examined by using a fuzzy logic approach. As is well known, driver errors are the most common reasons leading to accidents. Moreover, climate conditions, environmental structure of the highways, the geometry and pavement of the roads greatly affects occurrence of accidents. On the other hand, determining contribution of each parameter on the accidents is a complex task. For this reason, we have developed a fuzzy logic approach synthesizing statistics of mentioned reasons previously held.
