This article aims to make a short presentation, using the descriptive method, of the main elements that characterized Romania's participation in the Great War. This epochal event meant changing geopolitical and national realities in Europe, changing development paradigms, the emergence of new ideologies and new types of regimes. The Romanian state decided to participate in this war on the part of the Entente for the fulfillment of national ideals and state perfection. The motivations were clear, the risks being assumed. The political class of those times was divided on the option. These different options had deep roots and had not only political but also cultural and civilizational character. The moments through which Romanians and Romania had passed during the war were contradictory: from ecstasy, to agony, from optimism, to pessimism, from the risk of disappearing as a state to the realization of the Great Union.
