This paper argues that the methodology of techno-semiosis furthers our understanding of the modalities of production of meaning in conventional and digital photography. The aim is not to produce a new history of techniques, but rather to understand how scientific knowledge can enrich a device by influencing its meaning, its production, and the work of interpretation.
