Increased salt intake is considered as a major cause of hypertension and cardiovascular disease; hence reduction of dietary salt is highly recommended by all public health guidelines. A tailored approach to evaluation and intervention is required because of widely varying physiological responses to salt intake. To access sodium intake is challenging because 1) use of spot and 24-hour urine sodium are more suitable for population study, and 2) some of the adverse effects of salt are beyond its hypertensive effect. Recently an unknown mechanism of sodium absorption and storage has been discovered.
