In the article compound words from the Russian literary language of the 11th–17th centuries are analyzed and typologized from the point of view of the theory of nomination. An important concept for onomasiological analysis is the concept of onomasiological category. Three onomasiological categories are considered in the article: substantiality, actionality, attributiveness. Onomasiological categories determine the relationships in the structure of the onomasiological attribute. These relationships are the basis of the onomasiological signifi cance. The article considers the object, subjective, determinant, attributive, comparative, quantitative, attributive-determinant and attributive-object onomasiological signifi cances, distinguishes the following nominative types and assesses their quantitative presence in the body of the analyzed material: action-object (37%), action-subject (3.5%), equity-determinant (7%), attributive-substantive (33.5%), attribute-object (1.5%), attribute-determinant (6%), comparative (2.5%) and numeral (8%).
