Preservation of goat skin using fish scale powder: An initiative to reduce pollution in tannery wastewater
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to utilise fish scale powder (FSP) of Labeo rohita (Rohu, R) and a combination of Labeo rohita and Labeo catla (Rohu and Catla, RC) fish scales as an alternative to the salt curing of goatskins. The preservation process's efficacy was assessed by periodically evaluating the parameters of the preserved goatskins. This reduced the chloride content (Cl−) and total dissolved solids (TDS) in discharged effluent to 92.78 and 87.67% in experiment 1 (15% Rohu FSP + 5% salt) and 97.19 and 86.54% in experiment 2 (15% Rohu & Catla FSP + 5% salt), respectively.
