La prehistoria del Ecuador: Desde los trabajos arqueológicos de Julio Viteri Gamboa
Abstract
This bibliographic essay has been written to publicize the contribution made by Don Julio Viteri Gamboa to knowledge about the prehistorical period in Ecuador through his archaeological field research carried out in the canton of Milagro and other sites in the Ecuadorian coastal region. His work provides an account of the basic characteristics of the ancient coastal dweller: habitat, mode of life, agriculture and in particular the production of a great number of devices in which utility or functionality is a common feature. He shared his theories concerning knowledge of ancient man, based on the study of remains obtained from around 2000 excavations carried out alone or in conjunction with archaeologists Emilio Estrada Icaza, Betty Meggers and Clifford Evans. It is hoped that the dissemination of the work carried out by Viteri Gamboa will serve to raise public awareness of the importance of strengthening cultural identity and preserving the material cultural heritage.
