Evaluation of vortex flow regulator efficiency based on CFD modeling
Abstract
Aim of the study: Aim of the study was to map the bi-stable characteristics of the vortex controller as well as the indication of the optimal geometry parameters of the tested regulators, such as: chamber diameter, inlet and outlet opening area for given design conditions. In addition, the method evaluating the scope of effective use of vortex regulators according to the so-called the swirl parameter based on the results of numerical modeling. Material and methods: The numerical solution of the equations of the model of the flow of single-phase non-compressible liquid (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) together with the closing equations of the k-ε turbulence model were made in the FLOW 3D computer program. Results and conclusions: The obtained characteristics of the vortex flow controller's based on numerical calculations have a bi-stable performance (two-branch curve separated by an unstable zone) which was confirmed earlier in laboratory experiments carried out by other researchers. The method evaluating the scope of effective operation of vortex regulators based on the so-called the swirl parameter in the light of the results of numerical modeling was confirmed. This finding facilitates the optimal dimensioning of regulators and their correct selection for specific operating conditions.
