Chamomile use in the treatment of periodontal diseases
Abstract
Background: there is a spectrum of natural products and the phitotherapeutics are among them; the chamomile stands out because it treats the inflammatory periodontal disease due to the anti-inflammatory, healing, antiallergic, analgesic, antiseptic and bacteriostatic action this plant possesses. It has been demonstrated that chamomile also operates on the dentobacterial plaque, that is the main risk factor of the periodontal disease and it is used for the treatment of periodontal chronic and acute processes. Objective: to set up the scientific basis of the use of chamomile in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Methods: the information research was made in a period of time of 6 months and the following words were used: manzanilla, matricaria recutita, from the information obtained a bibliographic revision of a total of 150 published articles in the databases Pubmed, Hinari, Scielo and Medline through the file and references manager EndNote, from which 48 selected quotes were used, 40 of them from the last five years Results: chamomile is native of many European countries and it is grown in countries such as Germany, Egypt, France, Spain, Italy, Morocco and some parts of Eastern Europe. The diverse chamomile plants are very different and they request certain conditions to grow. Their properties, therapeutic actions and active principles vary from one specie to the other. Conclusions: the therapeutic effectiveness of the Matricaria chamomilla and the Phania matricarioides is been proved in the treatment of chronic and acute periodontal diseases.
