This is an analysis of the most relevant studies about social groups of the viceroyalty of Peru. Primarily, this essay focuses on methodological issues, such as the concept of prosopography, among several resources employed in those studies. Reviewing the principal researches, the author notes that the most analyzed groups have been the conquistadores, the encomenderos and other members of the upper classes. Besides, the studies focused on the eighteenth century have paid attention to the bureocrats, the merchants and also the popular groups of the society.
