Article highlights We review the theoretical background that supports parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis techniques applied to groundwater models. We demonstrate the application of parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis to mathematical groundwater models through an example. We comment on the main challenges that can be faced when applying parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis to groundwater models.
